Reflections on the #shopyourclosetchallenge

30 days, 30 pieces, no shopping. Doesn’t sound too hard, does it?

Well, I’m here to tell you that even for the most clothing-creative people, a limited wardrobe for 30 days has its challenges. Even when you call it 30-ish pieces.

When fellow stylist, Jess Dreyfus, started this challenge for the month of October, I thought it would be a fun way to reconnect with the clothes in my closet. After over 3 years of being pregnant and nursing, I was feeling pretty disconnected from the cute clothes I used to wear on a daily basis. I thought this challenge would be a great way to rediscover all the wonderful things I already own.

I was right, and I was wrong. I learned that:

  • Not shopping is hard but also empowering - not being able to shop for something new when I ‘needed’ it was hard but it made me think creatively about the pieces in my wardrobe.

  • A limited wardrobe is hard when the weather changes and when laundry isn’t done (when toddlers and babies are constantly dirtying clothes to the extent that I have to wash between every wear - especially for jeans, this is tough).

  • Thirty pieces as a limit is a lot and we are so lucky to even think about having more - not everyone has the luxury of having a full closet. This challenge made me appreciate what I do have and made me excited to wear everything that I couldn’t wear for the last 30 days.

Reflecting on the last 30 days also reinforced that there are always more things to want and to buy, but sometimes it is good to wait to see if you really ‘need’ an item before purchasing. And, with a limited wardrobe, getting dressed is easier and harder, and that’s just part of the fun.

Would I recommend this challenge? Absolutely. If you need to reconnect with or get inspired by your current wardrobe, give this challenge a try. And, if at the end of 30 days, you’re not excited about the rest of your closet, give me a call and I’ll help you edit your closet to items you love and fill in the gaps to create your perfect wardrobe.
