10 tips to elevate your style
A few weeks ago, I asked for YOUR top style tips! So many people shared their favorite ways to look more stylish instantly. Below is the compiled list -- I combined lots of tips that were similar and added my own commentary. I hope this inspires your #stayhome style and your future style when we are back in the real world.
Lean in to your own personal style -- determine what it is that you want to say to the world and own it! Not sure how to determine your personal style? Invest in a stylist or DIY by spending some time in your closet and then on Pinterest to identify things you like -- a style will emerge!
Know your body -- your body shape and colors. Not sure how? See my blog post.
Wear good quality and well-fitting basics -- I’m pro-sustainable brands and love this list. If you’re not sure of your size, a stylist can help or go to Nordstrom for a fitting.
Find a tailor or alterations service -- and use it! Not sure how to find a tailor? See my blog post.
Edit your closet -- pair down your closet by storing seasonal pieces (e.g. store winter clothes in summer and vice versa) and then be ruthless about what fits your style, your body shape, your colors and use the one-in-one-out rule. THEN, when seasons change, edit out items you didn’t wear and replace items (as needed) during sales. Or, work with a stylist for a closet edit. You’re not sure what I’m talking about? Read this.
Create seasonal uniforms or outfits -- a stylist can help you prepare for each season with a refresh. My clients love simplifying their closets to make getting dressed easy -- sometimes that means having a go-to ‘uniform’ for each of your life activities e.g. business casual work, Saturday kids sporting events, date nights, girls nights out, etc. You can do this yourself too -- just set aside some time to go through your closet at the start of each new season. Avoid impulse buys -- I suggest doing your research before buying and then really, really, really thinking about a piece before you buy it. Sometimes this means wishing you had it a few times before you really do, but it is the best way to reduce buyer’s remorse.
Invest in quality outerwear -- a top tip from seasoned stylists! Quality outerwear can make any outfit look amazing. Follow this rule and you’re bound to get compliments wherever you go -- even if it is school drop off with your pajamas underneath!
Add accessories to elevate your look -- investing in sunglasses and handbags, and having jewelry that means something to you are instant elevators. Try it and watch the compliments flow in!
Define your shape -- this one is largely a ‘tuck your tops’ tip -- identify your body shape (see #2 above) and then dress for it. A simple front tuck, French tuck or even a full tuck can make or break a look. Try it and you’ll see what I mean.
