Make the most of your winter layers
Well, friends, there are glimpses of light at the end of many tunnels right now -- including winter! While we are waiting for spring and warmer weather, we can make the most of our winter wardrobes -- looking as stylish as possible -- even for life at home.
How do we look stylish AND warm? I’m glad you asked.
Below are my favorite ways to play dress up in winter layers.
Start with a base layer that is *close to your skin*: it is so much easier to add layers when you’re not starting with bulk. I love a long sleeve shirt under a dress or a turtleneck under a jumpsuit. Starting with a neutral color as your base layer is also a great foundation for any look.
Incorporate color: just because it is winter, doesn’t mean we should shy away from color. In fact, adding color can lift your mood -- plus it looks really stylish in a layered outfit. Try adding a bright pop of color in one of your layers -- can be any layer, but I especially love a middle layer or an accessory.
Layer pieces of different lengths: try a longer shirt or cardigan under a cropped jacket. I especially love a fine knit cardigan over a button-down shirt, with a cropped leather jacket.
Play with textures: leather (as mentioned above) is a great outer option (or middle layer option -- leather vest anyone?!), as are faux furs, shearling, chunky knits, down/puffer, tweed, etc. Keep heavier textures as outside layers and statement pieces to minimize bulk since these items tend to be higher volume pieces.
Consider overall volume: it is easy to have too many layers and feel more like you’re going skiing than looking chic on a cold day so volume is key. Texture can help with volume -- using lighter knits, wool and cotton as base and middle layers reduces overall volume of an outfit. Wearing sleeveless layers is another great way to minimize volume. I love a tank top as a base layer and a vest as an outer layer so that I don’t have layer upon layer of sleeves.
Don’t forget about creating shape: using a belt is a great way to keep your waist defined. Wear skinny pants if your layers are bulky or long. Or wear wide-leg trousers or jeans with cropped tops. And different lengths (see above) will also help ensure you don’t look like a pile of clothes!
